The SNAP online application is temporarily unavailable. Please print and complete a written Application for Benefits (See steps to apply below for details) or contact your local department of social services.

Steps to apply for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) are as follows:

  1. Print an Application for Benefits.
  2. Complete the application and sign it.
  3. Deliver it to your local department of social services by mail, fax or in person.
  4. (Please note: Your application cannot be processed and is not considered complete until it is signed and received by your local department.)
  5. An interview will be required unless you meet the conditions for a waiver . Proof of identity (driver's license or picture I.D.), residence, income, resource and shelter expenses will be required.

There is also an application (The Virginia Food Connection) that allows Virginia residents to apply for multiple benefits from the following programs:

You may submit a partial application now, but you must complete the rest of the application and the interview process before your eligibility can be determined.

Before applying for WIC, applicants are encouraged to complete a preliminary eligibility screening.

The complete application takes about 15 minutes to 1 hour (depending on the programs you select). There is a rest stop between each of the five sections that allows you to stop, save what you have entered and return later to complete the rest of the application. Once you have completed a section, you can not go back and make changes to that section.
