The WIC program safeguards the health of low-income women, infants, and children up to age 5 who are at nutritional risk by providing nutritious foods to supplement diets, information on healthy eating, and referrals to health care. Although the program is administered by the Virginia Department of Health (VDH), application for benefits can be made through the Virginia Department of Social Services .
Steps to Apply
- Complete screening for potential eligibility
- Submit an application for food assistance online. You may also also pick up an application and apply at a local Virginia Department of Health office. Call (888) 942-3663 for locations near you.
Note: the following are required in order to apply: income verification (Medicaid card, pay stubs, TANF printout with case number, Food Stamp Notice of Eligibility, this year's W-2 form, and/or income tax returns) and proof of residency (utility bills, rent/mortgage receipts, Medicaid card, VA driver's license, or TANF/Welfare photo ID). The worker who reviews your application will tell you if any other verifications are needed. It is not necessary to be interviewed at the local Department of Social Services and mail-in applications are accepted.
