Annual Virginia Health and Safety Update Training for child care staff

The annual Virginia Health and Safety Update Training for Child Care Staff is a FREE online training offered by the Virginia Department of Social Services, through the Pennsylvania State University’s Better Kid Care program. This is a REQUIRED annual update training for early care and education providers who are Subsidy Vendors. This 3-hour Annual Health and Safety Update Training is a follow-up to the Virginia Preservice Training for Child Care Staff. This training has been available for all early care and education providers in Virginia starting Friday, March 1, 2019.

The annual Virginia Health and Safety Update Training covers the following topics:
  • Healthy Eating
  • Physical Activity Promotion
  • Immunization Recommendation Updates
  • Cytomegalovirus and Norovirus
  • Bed Bugs, Lice, Scabies, Fleas, Ticks, and Mosquito Management
  • Adverse Childhood Experiences and Trauma Awareness
  • Opioid Addiction and Epidemic

This training provides updated information on the basic health and safety requirements specified in the Child Care Development Block Grant and should be completed within 1 year (12 months) after you have taken the Virginia Preservice training. VDSS Licensing Inspectors will require existing Subsidy Vendors and staff to have a certificate of completion for this training on file.

New Subsidy Vendors will be required to take the 10-hour Virginia Preservice Training for Child Care Staff prior to approval. Within 90 days all staff must complete the Virginia Preservice Training for Child Care Staff. Then the Virginia Annual Health and Safety Update Training must be completed within 1 year (12 months) from the date on the Virginia Preservice Training for Child Care Staff certificate.
NOTE:
The 10-hour Virginia Preservice Training for Child Care Staff can only be completed once in Better Kid Care On Demand system. If you’ve already completed this course, you would complete the 3-hour annual Virginia Health and Safety Update Training for Child Care Staff course.

Note: On the Better Kid Care site, please look for the course that says “Virginia Health and Safety Update Training for Child Care Staff 2021 - $0”. This is a FREE training for Virginia Subsidy Vendors. To find health and safety training available for Virginia learners, use the “Required Health & Safety” option in the filters pull-down list (found under the search bar) in Better Kid Care’s On Demand.
