For Immediate Release
Dec. 27, 2002

RICHMOND - Governor Mark R. Warner today announced that Virginia has received notice that the Department of Social Services has been awarded a $922,000 bonus for increasing the number of children adopted from state-supervised foster care.
"In Virginia, permanent homes were found for 496 children who were in the foster care system," Governor Warner said. "These children left foster care and have been adopted by families that will provide them with care, stability, and love."

The bonus will be received by the Virginia Department of Social Services, which oversees the foster care and adoption programs of local departments of social services and private agencies.

"This is important work, and this is a significant accomplishment," said Social Services Commissioner Maurice A. Jones. "However, we must do more. We still have nearly 1,500 children in the foster care system ready for adoption right now. I encourage Virginians with compassion for children to consider opening their hearts and their homes to a child in foster care. Every child deserves a permanent, loving family."

The federal bonus is being awarded to Virginia because the state surpassed the goal of 321 adoptions set by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) for the 2001 federal fiscal year. Virginia was one of 23 states to receive a bonus, and received the eighth largest bonus awarded by HHS. The bonus was $4,000 for each child adopted over the goal, and an additional $2,000 for each special needs child. The money will be used to support the state’s adoption program.
