Virginia's summers typically produce temperatures in the 90s, however triple digit days can be common. On days like these, heat exposure can present health and safety dangers, especially for children, the elderly, and those who have certain medical conditions. Very high body temperatures and dehydration from heat exposure can damage the brain and other vital organs, and even result in death. The Virginia Department of Social Services reminds residents to take proper safety precautions for their families.

Governor Timothy M. Kaine and First Lady Anne Holton today praised the positive results of the work by the Council on Reform (CORE) to improve the rate of permanent placement for foster children in Virginia. It has been one year since Governor Kaine began an intensive effort to improve the delivery of child welfare and mental health services to the youth and families of Virginia. Part of this effort was a challenge to both public and private agencies to build on the momentum of First Lady Anne Holton's For Keeps initiative, and work together to find more permanent, family connections for children in foster care.

Tax law allows for larger credit on certain charitable donations; donated cars help change lives for working families; vehicles desperately needed

A little-known tax law may allow individuals to receive a greater credit for a vehicle donated to charity. When people donate their unwanted car to a charity such as Vehicles for Change (VFC), they may be able to deduct the fair market value of the vehicle, instead of the traditional deduction of just the sale price. That is because charities like VFC make significant improvements to donated cars and sell them to low-income working families at a reduced cost. VFC operates in 44 Virginia localities and is a community-based initiative that helps change the lives of low-income families throughout the Commonwealth.

Governor Timothy M. Kaine has proclaimed November as Adoption Awareness Month in the Commonwealth. As Virginians enter the holiday season and prepare to spend time with family and loved ones, more than 1,000 children in the Commonwealth are waiting for a permanent, loving home - a "forever family."
To help prospective adoptive parents learn more about children in the Commonwealth with the goal of adoption, an extensive database was created. "Meet the Virginia Kids" is a user-friendly feature found exclusively on the Virginia Department of Social Services (VDSS) Web site (http://www.dss.virginia.gov/family/ap/children_for_adoption.html), featuring some of the children awaiting adoption. The database can be searched by age, region, gender, and other demographics.
