22.1 Early Childhood Care and Education

Technical Assistance:
Discussed the new standards effective in October 2021.

Comments:
An unannounced monitoring inspection was conducted from 10:00am-12:00pm. At the time of entrance, 72 children were in care with 18 staff members present. Infants were observed playing with toys on the floor with their caregivers, sitting in bouncy seats and sleeping. Children were observed playing with table toys, reading books, watching a puppet show, making a gingerbread house, painting and other art activities, singing songs in circle time, cutting paper with scissors and writing skill activities. The site was clean and organized. Interactions between the children and staff were positive. A selection of staff and children records, the physical space, emergency supplies, evacuation drills, attendance records, medications and the Emergency Preparedness Plan were reviewed.

Standard #: 22VAC40-185-560-F
Description: Based on review, the center did not follow the most recent, age appropriate nutritional requirements of a recognized authority such as the Child and Adult Care Food Program of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).which requires two food components to be served for snack.
Evidence:
1. The center's menu listed gold fish and water on December 7th, mandarin oranges and water on December 16th and goldfish and water on December 20th.

Plan of Correction: The 3 days that did not include milk as second food component was change same day as inspection.

Standard #: 8VAC20-780-270-A
Description: Based on observation, the equipment of the center inside and outside were not maintained in a safe and operable condition.
Evidence:
1. In the Two Year old class, a home living sink had a missing part on the top right side of the sink which created a hole in the equipment.
2. The orange structure on the playground had a loose steering wheel.

Plan of Correction: The two pieces of equipment: 1. Work to be completed 12/15/2021. 2. Work to be completed 12/15/2021.

Standard #: 8VAC20-780-500-B
Description: Based on observation, the diapering area did not meet all requirements.
Evidence:
1. In the Toddler classroom, the changing pad had a thin crack approximately 1 1/2 inches long on the side and another small crack on the corner of the pad.

Plan of Correction: Changing pad replaced during inspection.
