Anthony Conyers' commitment to service spans more than 30 years. When he left the Army in 1972 as a Captain and Viet Nam veteran, he began a successful tenure with James City County, serving as Personnel Director and Transit Director.

His reputation as a strong advocate for those in need of assistance became more widely-known in the position of Community Services Manager for James City County. There, he made strides in community development, housing, social services, recreation, transit and extension. His major emphasis on self-sufficiency and reducing welfare dependency made lasting contributions within that community.

Anthony Conyers has served as commissioner since March, 2005. The Virginia Department of Social Services has 1,600 employees and a budget of more than $1.75 billion. The VDSS is the supervisory arm to 120 local departments, 27 Community Action Agencies and three statewide Community Action Organizations. Mr. Conyers oversees the family services, benefit programs, child care and development, child support enforcement and licensing functions for the state. The Commonwealth's efforts to strengthen partnerships with Faith Based organizations, AmeriCorps and Community Programs benefit greatly from Mr. Conyers' leadership and the work of social services.

Commissioner Conyers has a bachelor's degree in political science from West Virginia State College and has completed graduate study in public management from Old Dominion University. He is a graduate of the Virginia Executive Institute and the Federal Executive Institute. Anthony Conyers serves on the board of a number of community organizations.
