Tax Preparation Assistance

Get Ready to File

Tax season starts in January each year. You can take a few simple steps now to make filing easier.

Before You File

For caregivers of a child

  • If a parent or guardian claims a child every other year, talk early and agree on who will claim the child.
  • If two people claim the same child, it can delay your refund or cause errors.

Make sure you have the right ID number

  • You need a valid Social Security number. If you do not have one, you may need a tax ID number from the Internal Revenue Service.

Gather proof of income

  • If you are an employee, you should receive a W-2 form from your employer.
  • If you do contract work, you should receive a 1099 form.
  • If you work for yourself, keep a record of what you earn and what you spend.

Free Tax Help During Tax Season

You may be able to file your taxes for free. Many Virginia Department of Social Services clients qualify for free tax preparation support.

File online if possible

  • Online filing can help reduce mistakes and may help you get your refund faster.

Find Free Help Through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program offers free tax help through the Internal Revenue Service.
