63.2 Child Abuse & Neglect

Technical Assistance:
Discussion was held on the topics of documentation for children?s records, documentation for over-the-counter medication, staff training hours and evacuation drills.

Comments:
An unannounced renewal inspection was conducted from approximately 8:30am through 12:30pm. At the time of entrance, 46 children were in care with 12 staff members present. Ratios were in compliance. Children were observed during free toy play, reading, outside play, handwashing procedures, toileting procedures, and engaged in small group activities. The rooms were clean, organized and contained a varied supply of developmentally appropriate materials. Staff was observed engaging in conversations with children, supervising learning activities, supervising transitioning of children and supervising outdoor play. A selection of staff and children records, the physical space, emergency supplies, attendance records, required posted documents and medications were reviewed. Areas of non-compliance are identified in the violation notice. Violations:
Standard #: 22VAC40-185-240-A
Description: Based on record review, it was determined that three staff members had not completed training on recognizing child abuse and neglect.
Evidence:
1) There is no documentation in the file for Staff #2 (start date 08/27/07), #5 (start date 05/20/15) and #6 (start date 06/20/16) to indicate that they had completed training on recognizing child abuse and neglect.

Plan of Correction: We will audit all files and corroborate and document the staff who took it. We will ensure all staff have it completed in 30 days.

Standard #: 22VAC40-185-510-N
Description: Based on interview and medication review, the center did not dispose of medication remaining at the center for over 14 days after the expiration of the authorization.
Evidence:
1) Staff stated that Child #7 disenrolled from the center in August of 2019.
2) One over-the-counter medication and one prescription medication for Child #7 were present at the center on the date of inspection (10/21/2019).

Plan of Correction: We will email the parents in an attempt to return the medication. If we are unsuccessful we will dispose of the medication properly.
