- Technical Assistance:
Technical assistance today included Incident and Injury Reports and medication standards. We also discussed staffing and physical environment.
An unannounced monitoring inspection took place today from 1:45 - 3:45 pm. There were approximately 74 children present this afternoon. Outdoor areas were not inspected due to weather. Children were observed napping, eating snack, dancing to Shark music; building with blocks and manipulative toys, and participating in circle time. Standard #: 22VAC40-185-270-A Description: Based on observation during today's inspection, some areas of the center were observed to be in need of maintenance.
1. Outside the front door, lattice was hanging unhinged behind a bench, and some broken wooden areas were observed.
2. The infant room refrigerator thermometer read 50 degrees today. (It should be 40 or below).
Plan of Correction: 1. An order was placed this morning because of wind damage over the weekend. (the lattice was removed during the inspection.)
2. We will put another thermometer in there today to see if it confirms the temperature to be accurate, and we will adjust as needed.
Standard #: 22VAC40-185-280-B Description: Based on observation today, hazardous substances were not kept in locked places using a safe locking method that prevents access by children.
During today's inspection, both the laundry room and kitchen were unlocked when no staff were using the rooms.. The laundry room had small packets of detergent in a low shelving unit adjacent to the door, accessible at child height. A key was observed to be hanging from a hook, but the door was not locked from the beginning of the inspection. The kitchen was observed to have the door wide open, and detergents were accessible in a bin under the open sink.
Plan of Correction: These areas should be locked. I will talk to the staff and come up with a solution.
Standard #: 22VAC40-185-510-A Description: Based on a review of medications and staff confirmation today, not all children's medications and authorizations were found to be in accordance with the center's written medication policies.
1. There were two over the counter medications on-site with no child's name or dosage.
2. There were no authorizations for: the over the counter medication for an unidentified child; or the emergency allergy medication for Child # 1.
3.One medication was not returned to parents after authorizations were no longer in effect. The medication for Child # 3 was specified for ten days beginning 9/10, and the medication was still present.
Plan of Correction: Not available online. Contact Inspector for more information.
Standard #: 22VAC40-185-510-J Description: Based on observation and staff confirmation during today's inspection, some medications were not kept in a locked place as required.
Some children's medications were observed to be the opened office at the beginning of the inspection when there were no staff in the room. Staff report that the medications were outdated and waiting to go home, but they were on stored on a shelf .in the office.
Plan of Correction: We will make sure to have a different way of reminding to have parents take home medications that are no longer authorized or outdated. These will always be locked or in child-proof lock bags.
Standard #: 22VAC40-185-550-D Description: Based on a review of monthly practice drills and staff confirmation, monthly evacuation drills were not practiced recently.
There were no fire drills practiced in October or November.
Plan of Correction: We will do two make-up fire drills.
