Technical Assistance:
We discussed the requirement for hand washing before children eat if they arrive during a meal time. The risk assessment for a violation was provided.

Also, we reviewed the importance of maintaining all medication forms. We talked about the serious injury reporting process.

Comments:
Thank you for your assistance during today's unannounced monitoring inspection conducted from 9:29 AM to 2:30 PM. Today, there were fifty children, ages three through five years, with six to eight staff. I viewed daily routines, program activities, staffing, supervision, interactions with children, posted information, medication, emergency supplies and drill records, insurance, injury records, five records for children, agency inspections, lunch, menu, illness policies, agency inspection reports, five training records for staff, indoor and outdoor areas. The children were provided a variety of choices for learning experiences at interest areas of the classroom. They have had group activities and discussions about alphabet letters and objects that are balls. Active play was enjoyed in the motor room and the gym during this cold, windy day. The staff have regular communication with parents.

Violations:
Standard #: 22VAC40-185-500-A
Description: Based on observation of the meal times, daily routines, and an interview with staff, the staff did not always ensure that all children's hands were washed with soap and running water or disposable wipes before eating meals. Evidence: During breakfast, a parent was seen dropping off her child in the cafeteria. The child was seated at the table. Then, the child was served a breakfast plate and began to drink milk and eat cereal. When questioned, staff member 1 confirmed that the child's hands were not washed before she was seated and began eating.

Plan of Correction: Staff member 1 walked the child to a table and had her used a disposable hand wipe to wash hands before she continued eating. The requirement for hand washing and assisting children who arrive during breakfast will be reviewed during a staff meeting. The staff will always make sure children's hands are washed right before they eat meals and snacks.
