- Technical Assistance:
It was discussed that the cords to radios/CD players that are placed above the heads of the children could be pulled upon by children, causing the device to fall onto the child(ren). Cords should be secured to ensure that the device cannot be pulled off the cabinet, shelf, etc. Staff purses/bags/backpacks must be inaccessible to the children unless staff can demonstrate that there are no medications, hazardous substances, sharp objects, etc. in the bags.
The inspector arrived at 11:00 AM and departed at 1:30 PM. Fifteen children, ages six weeks - five years, were in care with three staff. Ratios were as follows: infants: 4:1; toddlers: 3:1; and children two through five years: 8:1. The program director reported that no children are being administered any medication while in care. No children's injuries were reported. A sampling of four staff records and four children's records were reviewed. Morning activities, lunch service and nap time were observed. Please contact the inspector at (757) 491-3975 if there are any questions.
Standard #: 22VAC40-185-510-J Description: Based upon a tour, the facility has not ensured that medication is kept in a locked place using a safe locking method that prevents access by children. Evidence: There was a container of Excedrin Migraine on the desk in the back office. Both the door to the office and the gate from the classrooms were open while children were in care. Plan of Correction: The director placed this medication that belonged to staff in a locked location. All staff will be reminded that ALL medication must be kept in the locked location.
