Technical Assistance:
Consultation and technical assistance was provided on the requirements for medication administration training certification.

Comments:
An unannounced renewal inspection was conducted on January 17, 2017. The director was present for the inspection. Each age group present was observed and the ratio and activities were noted. There were 4 three year old children with 1 staff learning about colors. A second group of three year old children included 6 children with 1 staff. The children were learning about the letter "B" and were coloring a work sheet. A third group of three year old children included 7 children with 1 staff. The children were having Circle Time and learning about the days of the week. There were 5 four year old children with 1 staff, and they were having a reading activity. School age children were not present. Lunch was served during the inspection and the menu for the day was meatloaf with gravy, greens, honeydew melon, rolls, and milk. Rest time was also briefly observed with the children resting on cots. Five children's records and 3 staff records were reviewed. Emergency and shelter drills had been conducted and documented. A recommendation will be made to renew the license. Inspection began: 10:25 Inspection ended: 12:20

Standard #: 22VAC40-185-240-D-4
Description: Based on a review of documentation the center did not ensure that a child for whom emergency medication had been prescribed was always in the care of a staff member who met the requirements of Medication Administration Training certification. Evidence: Child # 5 had an emergency medication on site. The staff had obtained a training in "Epi Pen Use and and Administration," but the training did not meet the requirements of the standards for child day centers.

Plan of Correction: Staff will receive the required training as soon as possible. The director plans to schedule the training at the next available date of a trainer.

Standard #: 22VAC40-185-510-D
Description: Based on a review of documentation the center did not have medication authorization on file for a child who had an emergency medication on site. Evidence: Child # 5 had an emergency medication on site but the center did not have a written medication authorization from the parent and/or physician on file.

Plan of Correction: The parent will be given the form to complete the long term authorization.
