Technical assistance today included new background check information; allergy charts; physical environment and supplies.

Comments:
An unannounced monitoring inspection took place today from 11:15 - 2 pm. There were 65 children present today. All classrooms were within ratio. I observed children playing outdoors; listening to a story; eating lunch and beginning naptime. Record keeping and medications were well-organized and complete. If you have any questions, please contact me at brenda.kuhlman@dss.virginia.gov

Violations:
Standard #: 22VAC40-185-270-A
Description: Based on observation during today's inspection, some areas and equipment of the center were found not to be maintained in a safe condition. Evidence: 1. A large cable was observed stretched across the lower part of an aluminum fence in the playground on two sides of a corner area accessible to children. It was straight across but with enough space to pose an entrapment hazard. Two children were observed sitting on the cable today. (This was previously cited on /26/17.) 2. There were splintery areas of wood in several areas of the playground -- the retaining wall; the gate surrounding the trash, the wooden box covering the gas meters. 3. There were sharp areas where siding was broken at child height in the playground. 4. There were some areas where loose ground cover fabric was accessible on the ground, posing a tripping hazard. 5. Bunji cords were accessible, loose on gates where children were playing.

Plan of Correction: 1. I will call facilities today to come out to work on the fence. We will make the area off limits to children. 2. I will call facilities to replace or repair wooden areas. 3. I will call facilities to replace the siding. Temporarily, we will put tape on the siding area. 4. We will cut the fabric and sweep mulch over it. 5. We will remove them.

Standard #: 22VAC40-185-280-B
Description: Based on observation today, a hazardous substance was observed to be in an unlocked place. Evidence: In the unlocked closet in one classroom, a box of science materials was accessible which included Epsom salts and a box of antacid/pain reliever packets.

Plan of Correction: Removed during inspection.
