22VAC40-191 Background Checks (22VAC40-191)
- Technical Assistance:
Technical assistance today included requirements for new background checks. Your fire inspection expired this month (3/9/17). We also discussed record keeping and food for children with allergies.
An unannounced renewal inspection was conducted today from 2:45 - 5:10 pm. There were 97 children present in 8 classrooms. All rooms were within ration. I observed children waking from nap, transitioning to snack; and going outdoors. I observed children running alongside a teacher blowing bubbles and trying to catch them; riding in a toddler carriage; riding tricycles; playing with balls and discussing concepts such as weather, seasons and tomorrow's planned egg hunt. Record keeping was found to be well-organized and complete. If you have any questions, please contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org
Standard #: 22VAC40-185-270-A Description: Based on observation during today's inspection, there were some areas and equipment of the center that were not maintained in a safe condition as required.
Indoors: 1. A cabinet door under the diaper table in Infant B had a broken hinge, leaving the door hanging although locked.
1. The retention wall on the toddler playground was observed to be splintering, with sharp areas protruding upward. This was cited 12/17.
2. Loose branches and a significant tree limb were observed on top of the shed in the playground; where children were riding trikes; loose branches and a 5 inch wide tree limb were on top of the retention wall where the younger children were playing.
3. There was a sharp edge observed at ankle height in the siding of the building in the playground. (previously cited)
4. A piece of sharp-edged metal fencing pipe was accessible at child height in the corner of the playground.
Plan of Correction: Facilities are coming tomorrow. They were here yesterday to measure the retention wall to remove it from the playground. I will put a work order in to repair the diaper table, fence and window. Staff will be aware of the siding issue and duct tape will be put on today. One piece of siding was pushed back during the inspection. Duct tape will be put on the fencing pipe. Loose branches and limbs from the recent storm were removed during the inspection..
Standard #: 22VAC40-185-330-B Description: Based on observation during today's inspection, there was an inadequate amount of resilient material under and in the fall zones of an outdoor play structure today. Evidence: While there was evidence of mulch on the ground, the areas within the fall zone, especially below the slide chute, had bare spots where mulch had been washed, pushed or blown away. Plan of Correction: We will sweep it today, and check on it on a regular basis.
Standard #: 22VAC40-185-510-A Description: Based on a review of records today, the center did not adhere to the center procedures for administering medication. Evidence: Center procedures for medication include a documented allergy action plan and appropriate treatment if required for a reaction in a child with a diagnosed allergy. Child # 1, who had current documentation from the physician that prohibited certain foods after a previous reaction, prescribed specific medication for the child, but the center did not have the appropriate treatment available today. Plan of Correction: I will speak to the parent today.
