Technical Assistance:
VAC 40-185-380 A2: Sleep or rest. a. Centers operating five or more hours per day shall have a designated rest period for at least one hour but no more than two hours. (1) Cribs, cots, beds, or mats shall be used. (2) After the first 30 minutes, children not sleeping may engage in quiet activities.

Comments:
An unannounced complaint investigation was conducted with the owner and director beginning at 10:20 AM and ending at 12:00 PM. The allegation was regarding outdoor activity, rest period, supervision, and care, protection, and guidance of children at the center. Three staff interviews were conducted. Review of documentation and class observations were conducted. It was determined that the complaint regarding rest period and outdoor activity was valid. The complaint regarding supervision and care, protection, and guidance was not valid. Description: Based on staff interviews and documentation, the center was not providing one hour per day or session of outdoor activity for children that were at the center for five or more hours per day or session. Evidence: The junior kindergarten class schedule provided 30 minutes of outdoor activities. The staff stated that the children were taken outside for 30 minutes daily when the weather permitted.

Plan of Correction: The center stated that they would provide an hour of outdoor activity for the junior kindergarten class.

Description: Based on staff interview and a review of documentation, the center did not have a designated rest period for at least one hour but no more than two hours. Evidence: The junior kindergarten class had a designated rest period for 30 minutes.

Plan of Correction: The center will designate another 30 minutes for the rest period in the junior kindergarten schedule. This will bring the designated rest period to the one hour required by the standards.
