22VAC40-191 Background Checks (22VAC40-191)

Technical Assistance:
Discussion held on the topic of providing thermometers for infant room refrigerators in order to monitor temperature and prevent food spoilage.

An unannounced monitoring inspection was conducted today from 12:10pm-1:40pm. There were 99 children (infants-5yrs.) directly supervised by 14 staff. The physical plant, 5 staff records, 5 children?s records, child guidance, emergency supplies, and policies were inspected. Children were observed eating lunch consisting of a turkey corn dog, peaches, baked beans and milk. Several classes were observed transitioning to to nap including using the restroom. In the infant room caregivers were observed playing with a group of infants on the classroom mat. During the inspection a parent was observed to welcomed by classroom staff as she spent time with her child. It was reported that the center did not have any medications on site on the date of inspection. There was an abundant supply of materials for the children. The center was clean and organized. Description: Based on observation, children's records were not treated confidentially. Evidence: An child's health information was documented on an allergy list posted in classroom C.

Plan of Correction: We will post the information in a way that protects the identity of the student.

Standard #: 22VAC40-185-80-A
Description: Based on record review, the center did not keep a written record of children in attendance each day. Evidence: Classroom E did not have a record of attendance for 6/5/2018.

Plan of Correction: Attendance will be taken immediately.

Standard #: 22VAC40-185-280-B
Description: Based on observation, not all hazardous substances such as cleaning materials, insecticides, and pesticides were kept in a locked place using a safe locking method that prevents access by children. Evidence: A chemical sponge was observed stored on the paper towel dispenser in room D.

Plan of Correction: We will have the teachers lock up sponge.

Standard #: 22VAC40-185-560-M
Description: Based on observation, staff members did not sit with children at meal times. Evidence:Staff in classroom F were observed setting cots down while several children remained seated finishing their lunches.

Plan of Correction: We will remind staff to sit with children as they are eating.
