The following inspection took place between the hours of 10 am through 12:30 pm. Today, I met with the Staff of the Ballston Children Center located in Arlington, Virginia. At the start of this unannounced monitoring inspection there were a total of 94 children with 16 staff; good ratios in all 6 rooms. A total of 6 children?s files and 6 staff files were reviewed. The children were engaged in the following: bathroom breaks, hand washing, blocks, toy play, learning about Asia, panda plates, cherry blossom art, large motor skills outside on playground, lunch, and other organized activities. If you should have any future questions, please call or send an e-mail. Thank you. Charlie Perkins, Licensing Inspector (703) 309-3963

Standard #: 22VAC40-185-270-A Description: Based on observation, a piece of equipment of the center, outside, was not maintained in a safe condition. Evidence - 1. On the date of inspection (02/27/2018), a ramp with red metal footholds, attached to the wooden climbing equipment that sits to the back of outside center playground has an area of wood that is showing signs of deterioration and may have been broken off. The area is near the bottom left side of ramp as you face it; near the mulch line. 2. It is now both a tripping and splintering hazard. Plan of Correction: Maintenance will be contacted in order to fix this area. In the meantime, children will be instructed not to play on the ramp part of this structure.
Standard #: 22VAC40-185-550-E Description: Based on review and interview, it was determined that the center did not record the two shelter-in-place practice drills conducted in 2018. Evidence - 1. On the date of inspection (02/27/2019), the 2018 drill log indicated that no shelter-in-place drills were documented as having been completed during the previous year. 2. The Center Director stated (during an interview conducted on the date of inspection) that two drills were conducted, but were not recorded in the log as required. Plan of Correction: All drills shall now be documented within the drill log. Those previously not recorded shall be documented now.
