Standard #: 22VAC40-185-400-A Description: Based on observation the center did not ensure staff interacted with children in order to promote the child's emotional, and social well-being and provide needed help, comfort, support. Evidence: The 3 year-old classroom was observed during morning circle from 9:15am -10:00am. Staff did not interact with the children in order to promote the children's emotional well-being, help, comfort or support. Staff told the group of 3 year-old children to stand, place their right hands over their heart and recite the pledge of allegiance. Some children did not know which hand was their right hand. Staff did not go to the children to show them how, but instead gave verbal directives in a harsh tone to "use your right hand." The children also played musical chairs, which resulted in a child crying because they were out. Staff responded to the crying child by telling him to "stop crying." Other statements made to the children were, "Stop!, No!, Get off! Stand-up! Sit down, I told you to stop!" Plan of Correction: The following corrective action was provided by the director during the exit interview: The director has spoken to this staff in the past. The director will speak to staff again about providing positive redirection and care and comfort to the children. Staff will be sent to training.
