An unannounced monitoring inspection was conducted today. There were 22 children in care, with a total of 6 staff members assigned to their direct supervision. Children's records, staff records, staff training, background checks, children's medications, emergency preparedness items, classroom interactions and programming, children's nutrition, and the indoor/outdoor physical plant were inspected today. The school offers an outdoor classroom approach to programming. All children were observed engaging in a very large variety of outdoor activities, creating theme-based crafts, eating snack, and making various herb scented projects to reflect the "5 senses" theme. The children were to be served brunswick stew, wheat bread, fresh salad, mixed fruit, and milk for lunch today. The on site portion of this inspection was completed between approximately 10:00am and 11:20am. Due to computer failure, the administrative portion of this inspection had to be completed off site later in the day. Thank you for meeting with me today. Standard #: 22VAC40-185-160-A Description: Based on a review of staff health records, it was determined that one staff person has not obtained a TB health screening. Evidence: Staff person B began employment on 3/12/19. There is no documentation to show that this person obtained a TB screening either within 12 months prior to employment or within 21 days after employment. Plan of Correction: She got her TB screening completed at the time of hire. I asked for the documentation immediately during the inspection. The screening results will be included in her file.
Standard #: 22VAC40-185-270-A Description: Based on observations, it was determined that the school grounds have not been maintained in a manner that keeps the children's area free of bugs. Evidence: Because of the programming used by the school, the children spend a very large portion of their day outdoors essentially in an outdoor classroom setting. The children use a large portion of the school's massive outdoor grassy areas. These grassy areas have gotten very long and need to be mowed. Plan of Correction: We have contracted to have the grass mowed weekly and we're expecting the mowing company to be on site tomorrow.
Standard #: 22VAC40-185-320-B Description: Based on observations, it was determined that one of the children's bathrooms was not equipped as required. Evidence: The basement level children's bathroom was not equipped with paper towels. Plan of Correction: The paper towels were replenished immediately during the inspection.
