Technical Assistance:
We discussed the requirements for diapering procedures. The risk assessment for a violation was provided. We reviewed the requirements for injury records, staff records, medication and sunscreen. Also, we talked about your plans for maintenance of the mulch. The toddler plastic slide should always be positioned so resilient surfacing is in the fall zones.

Comments:
Thank you for your assistance during the unannounced monitoring inspection conducted from 11:27 AM to 3:35 PM. Today, there were forty children in care, ages infancy through school age, with five to six staff. I viewed staffing, supervision, interactions with children, equipment, activities, daily routines, emergency plan, emergency supplies and drill records, posted information, health inspection, nutrition, menu, infant care and records, diapering procedures, diaper ointment, sunscreen, injury records, medication, indoor and outdoor areas. The children had access to a variety of age appropriate toys and materials. Group story times and discussions were led by teachers. The teachers provided supervision of their group and positive interactions with the children. Let me know if you have any questions. 540/430-9259

Violations:
Standard #: 22VAC40-185-500-B
Description: Based on observations of the diapering procedures, and interviews with staff, the center staff did not ensure that soiled diapers were disposed in a way that neither the staff member's hand nor the soiled diaper touched an exterior surface of the storage system during disposal. Evidence: During disposal of a soiled diaper, wipes, and used gloves, in the infant/toddler area, staff member 6 was seen hand lifting the lid partially open to place the items into the lined container. The staff indicated that the foot pedal that was not used during disposal does work for opening the lid.

Plan of Correction: An administrative staff person reminded staff to use the foot pedal for disposal of items during diaper changes. The director will review diapering procedures during the next staff meeting. Administrative staff will conduct occasional observations of diapering procedures to make sure staff adhere to required procedures.
