A complaint investigation was initiated on 6/27/19 regarding allegations of a forbidden action. A review of the center's video recording of 6/11/19 was made, review of both staff and child records and staff interviews were conducted. Based on the preponderance of evidence, no violations found regarding forbidden actions, however violations were determined regarding behavioral guidance and center policies. Standard #: 22VAC40-185-40-E Complaint related: Yes Description: Based on the center's video recording system on 6/11/19 and staff statements, the licensee failed to ensure that the center's own behavior management policy and positive guidance practice was not followed. Evidence: l. The center's behavior management policy requires that staff redirect a child's activity, reasonable discussing the problem or using planned ignoring. The center's positive guidance practice requires staff to model positive behavior by using kind words, nice manners and a calm voice. The center's video recording showed Staff #1 walking from around the corner of the classroom and lunging towards Child #1 by leaning over the table where Child #1 was sitting. Staff #1 spoke to Child #1 in a harsh tone. Staff #1 instructed Child #1 to get up from the table and sit alone. Staff #1 failed to provide redirection and model positive behavior. Plan of Correction: Staff person was placed on administrative leave directly after the incident was reported to management. Once tape was reviewed and staff were spoken to, the staff member was terminated. Staff will continue to have training and management will continue to
Standard #: 22VAC40-185-400-B Complaint related: Yes Description: Based on observation of the center's video om 6/11/19 and staff interviews, behavioral guidance was provided to one child which was not constructive in nature and did not redirect children to appropriate behavior. Evidence: l. The center's video recording of 6/11/19 showed that Staff #1 lunging forward towards Child #1 who was sitting at a table. Staff #2 witnessed Staff #1 lean forward over a table and heard Staff #1 speak to Child #1 in a harsh tone. Plan of Correction: Staff member was placed on admin leave directly after the incident was reported to management. Once the tape was reviewed and staff were spoken to, the staff member was terminated. Staff will continue to have training and management will continue to monitor classrooms through video and in person observations.
