Technical Assistance:
Technical assistance today included physical environment and a plan for having all staff report items in need of repair in a timely basis.

An unannounced monitoring inspection was conducted today from 10:30 am - 1 pm. There were 118 children in care. All rooms were within ratio. I observed children listening to a story, doing movement exercises with a physical education visitor, eating lunch and preparing for naptime. If you have any questions, please contact me at

Standard #: 22VAC40-185-270-A
Description: Based on observation during today's inspection, there were some areas and equipment not maintained in a clean, safe, operable condition as required. Evidence: 1. In the Infant room, there was very heavy frost buildup observed in the refrigerator used for bottles. 2. A broken wooden play refrigerator was observed in use, with the top removed, making the hinges more accessible to fingers. 3. The electrical connections to the bottle warmers in the infant area were approximatley 6 inches from the faucet. They had previously been tacked above the area, but the plastic fastener holding the wire was broken. 4. A slippery area was observed in a high traffic area in the toddler room from 11:20 - 11:50 am. Peaches and squashed peas were observed on the tile floor during and after lunch; staff and children walked the area to go to cots, the sink, the diapering table, etc 5. The School Age room had very dirty surfaces observed at vents, mouldings, etc. Between the infant/toddler area, the plastic hangers holding baskets that contained shoe covers was dirty with brown streaks. 6. Standing rolls of heavy duty craft paper were stored upright but loose in an area used to line up children in the SA room.

Plan of Correction: 1. The staff had emptied the refrigerator over the weekend for defrosting, but forgot to pull the plug. They will do it tonight. 2. The play refrigerator was removed for repairs today. 3. The area has had a work order to change the wiring. For now we will get a smaller extension cord since we are using a different appliance to warm the baby bottles and we will make sure it is secured away from the sink. 4. High traffic surfaces will be wiped up as soon as possible. 5. Paper rolls were removed during the inspection.

Standard #: 22VAC40-185-280-B
Description: Based on observation during today's inspection, some hazardous substances were accessible. Evidence: 1. In several rooms, plastic safety latches were not attached strongly enough to keep the cabinets from opening, leaving cleaners accessible. 2. A filled bucket and mop were stored in the children's play area in one room during the transition to naptime.

Plan of Correction: New safety locks will be ordered. The bucket was removed from the classroom while children were present.
