Caterpillar Clubhouse # 1
664 Village Highway
Rustburg, VA 24588
Current Inspector: Victoria E Dawson (540) 309-2674
Complaint Related: No
Standard #: 22VAC40-185-350-C Description: Based on observation and interview, the center failed to ensure that when children are regularly in ongoing mixed age groups, the staff-to-children ratio applicable to the youngest child in the group shall apply to the entire group.
1. Based on observation at arrival of the inspector at approximately 7:15 am, there were 12 children present with one staff member in the gym area. The ages of the children were: three two year olds, two three year olds, seven school-age children. The ratio required would have been one staff person for every eight children based on the age of the youngest child.
2. At approximately 7:30 am there were 13 children (four two year olds, two three year olds, seven school-age) with one staff person. The required ratio would still be one staff for eight children.
3. According to staff #1 and #2 the mixed age group is a regularly occurring practice every morning from opening of the center throughout most of the day.
Plan of Correction: This was corrected while the inspector was present as another staff person arrived at approximately 7:45 am. A third staff person arrived at approximately 7:50 am. All of the school-age children left between 7:35 am and 8:15 am. The director will have a second staff person for this group to report at 7:00 am starting Monday.
