Technical Assistance:
Technical assistance today included record keeping, emergency procedures, a separate chain of command for each facility; schedule for the assistant administrative staff; measuring hot water; ensuring refrigerator temperatures and storage of items from home.

Comments:
A scheduled initial inspection of a new branch of an existing child care was conducted today. The center will be located in a renovated building. There will be five classrooms. Administration plan for this site to care for infants, toddlers and preschoolers. Parents will bring meals but snacks will be provided by the center. The playground is in the process of construction but administration will document plans to provide outdoor physical activity until the area is deemed appropriate. If you have any questions, please contact me at brenda.kuhlman@dss.virginia.gov

Violations:
Standard #: 22VAC40-185-270-A
Description: Based on observation today, there were some areas of the building that were not found to be maintained in a safe, operable condition.
Evidence:
1. There were no locks or barriers on the doors of the janitorial closet and the electrical closet in the hallway between classrooms.
2. Doors to classrooms were designed of clear glass but without a decorative warning to prevent children from reaching through the window.

Plan of Correction: 1. Locks will be placed on these closet doors to prevent access to children.
2. Decorative objects such as the center logo will be put on the glass at child height.

Standard #: 22VAC40-185-550-B
Description: Based on a review of the center's written emergency preparedness plan, not all standards were covered as required.
Evidence:
The written document did not address facility containment procedures and training/review plans with staff; City emergency and nonemergency numbers were not posted near the telephones or as part of the emergency plan.

Plan of Correction: We will add these things to the written Emergency Preparedness Plan, and post the emergency numbers.
