Comments:
An unannounced renewal inspection was conducted on 1/16/20 from 10:30am until 12:50pm. At the time of entrance, there were 58 children in care with 11 staff. A sample of 6 children's records and 7 staff/board member records were reviewed. Children were observed playing on the playground, participating in morning learning activities, eating lunch and transitioning to nap time. Restroom, hand washing and lunch service procedures were also observed. Medication, first aid and emergency supplies, the emergency preparedness plan, documentation of emergency practice drills, children's injury reports and center postings were reviewed. One violation in the area of special care procedures and emergencies is identified on the violation notice and was discussed with the center director during the exit interview.

Violations:
Standard #: 22VAC40-185-550-D
Description: Based upon review of emergency drill records and interview, the center did not ensured that a minimum of two shelter-in-place drills are conducted per year.

Evidence:
1. The emergency drill record provided had only one shelter-in-place drill documented for 2019.
2. The center director confirmed that only one shelter-in-place drill was conducted in 2019.

Plan of Correction: Going forward, the center director will ensure that the required two shelter-in-place drills are conducted annually.
