An unannounced monitoring inspection was conducted today.
There were 58 children in care with 17 staff, two administrators and a cook.
Children were observed eating lunch, playing outdoors, resting and actively playing.
Previous violations, medications, six children's files and eight staff files were reviewed.

Violations:
Standard #: 22VAC40-185-270-A
Description: Based on observation in the toddler community, the facility failed to ensure that all are safe.
Evidence:
1. There is a large cactus plant in the toddler 2 community. There are sharp thorns on the plant which are accessible to children in care.

Plan of Correction: The director removed the plant during the inspection.

Standard #: 22VAC40-185-320-B
Description: Based on the observation of the bathroom routine, the facility failed to provide all required items for the restrooms used by children.
Evidence:
1. Children are repeatedly using cloth towels to dry their hands, instead of a single use towel.

Plan of Correction: The head of school will ensure that all children use a fresh towel for each time they dry their hands.

Standard #: 22VAC40-185-430-B
Description: Based on observation in the toddler community, the facility failed to ensure that small items used for counting, are not choking hazards for young children.
Evidence:
1. Shell macaroni and dried cannellini beans are on a low shelf accessible to children.

Plan of Correction: The head of school removed the choking hazards during the inspection and retrained staff to ensure that choking hazards are not available to children.

Standard #: 22VAC40-185-500-B
Description: Based on the observation of the bathroom routine, the facility failed to provide all required items for the diapering area.
Evidence:
1. Staff are using cloth towels to clean the diapering mat instead of paper towels.

Plan of Correction: The head of school will ensure that a single use paper towel is used to clean the diapering surface.
