Review of COVID-19 Essential Guidance for Child Care programs

Please refer to the American Association of Pediatrics for guidance on the usage of blankets and pillows for children under the age of two years.

Comments:
This inspection was conducted by licensing staff using an alternate remote protocol, necessary due to a state of emergency health pandemic declared by the Governor of Virginia. A monitoring inspection was initiated on 08/24/2020 and concluded on 08/26/2020. The director was contacted by telephone to initiate the inspection. There were 56 children present and 12 staff. The inspector emailed the director/provider a list of items required to complete the inspection. The Inspector reviewed 5 children?s records and 4 staff records submitted by the facility to ensure documentation was complete. Information gathered during the inspection determined non-compliance(s) with applicable standards or law and violations were documented on the violation notice issued to the facility.

Violations:
Standard #: 22VAC40-185-280-G
Description: Based on observation and interview, the center did not ensue when using substitute containers for potentially hazardous substances, the contents were indicated on the container.
Evidence:
There was a clear spray bottle containing a liquid substance on a cubby in the preschool classroom. The spray bottle containing the liquid was not labeled to indicate the contents. The staff member in the room said the bottle was a soap and water substance.

Plan of Correction: The following plan of correction was provided by the director during the exit interview:
The staff member labeled the bottle during the inspection. The director will monitor for future compliance.

Standard #: 22VAC40-185-500-A
Description: Based on observation the center did not ensure all requirements were met when hand washing.
Evidence
A staff member in the toddler room was observed changing a child's diaper. The staff member did not wash her hands after the change and/or before opening a cabinet and retrieving cleaning supplies.

Plan of Correction: The following plan of correction was provided by the director during the exit interview:
The director will talk with staff about proper hand washing procedures and will monitor for compliance.
