Comments:
This inspection was conducted by licensing staff using an alternate remote protocol, necessary due to a state of emergency health pandemic declared by the Governor of Virginia.

A monitoring inspection was initiated on 12/15/20 and concluded on 12/18/20. The director was contacted by telephone to initiate the inspection. There were 31 children present and 6 staff. The inspector emailed the director a list of items required to complete the inspection. The Inspector reviewed 3 children?s records and 3 staff records submitted by the facility to ensure documentation was complete.
Information gathered during the inspection determined non-compliance with applicable standards or law and violations were documented on the violation notice issued to the facility.

The Licensing Inspector has reviewed with the provider COVID-19 Essential Guidance for Child Care programs.

Violations:
Standard #: 22VAC40-185-510-J
Description: Based on observation and interview the center failed to ensure that medication is kept in a locked place using a safe locking method that prevents access by children.

Evidence:
1. There was one epinephrine injectable medicine stored in an unlocked child's backpack on a hook in the hallway outside of the yellow (pre-k 3) classroom. The medication was accessible and within reach of children in care.
2. The center director confirmed that the medication was not kept in a locked container as required by the standards.

Plan of Correction: The center responded with the following: The medication was taken out of the backpack and placed in a locked cabinet in the office during the inspection. Center management will retrain staff and remind parents about the center's medication procedures.
