Comments:
This inspection was conducted by licensing staff using an alternate remote protocol, necessary due to a state of emergency health pandemic declared by the Governor of Virginia.
A monitoring inspection was initiated on February 2, 2021 and concluded on February 5, 2021. The director was contacted by telephone to initiate the inspection. There were 3 children present and 8 staff. The inspector emailed the director a list of items required to complete the inspection. The Inspector reviewed the background checks for 3 staff and qualifications for 2 staff that were submitted by the facility to ensure documentation was complete. This inspection also included a virtual tour of the center's areas related to inspection. Information gathered during the inspection determined non-compliance(s) with applicable standards or law and violations were documented on the violation notice issued to the facility.
The Licensing Inspector has reviewed with the provider COVID-19 Essential Guidance for Child Care programs.

Violations:
Standard #: 22VAC40-185-560-F-4
Description: Based on staff interviews, virtual observation and photographs , the licensee did not ensure children three years of age or younger were not offered foods that are considered to be potential choking hazards.

Evidence: The lunch prepared for for children age two and toddlers was observed virtually and confirmed by center director during virtual inspection consisted of bananas and carrots that were cut into circles. There were 5 two year old children and 3 toddlers during the inspection.
Foods that are round, hard, small, slippery, or thick are considered high-risk foods for young children because they can lodge in small airways causing a child to choke.

Plan of Correction: Center Director will ensure cook and staff are familiar and trained in appropriate age food service and choking prevention. Documents will also be posted in the kitchen for future use.
