Today we discussed the requirements for documentation if a child has a diagnosed food allergy as well as the importance of distinguishing between a food allergy and a food preference and clearly documenting it as such in the child's record.
We also discussed several options for lighting in areas where children are resting or sleeping. While it is fine to dim the lights considerably, the staff must be able to clearly view children in order to supervise them and children must be able to safely move about the area if they need to go to the restroom or walk through the space for any number of reasons. In addition, children who choose not to sleep must be offered a quiet activity (and be able to adequately see to engage in the activity).

This inspection was conducted by licensing staff, in part by using an alternate remote protocol, including telephone contacts, documents review and interviews. A tour of the program was also conducted.
A Renewal inspection was initiated on 3/23/2022 and concluded on 3/25/2022. The provider was contacted by telephone and documentation was reviewed virtually. On 3/23/2022 there were 42 children and 7 caregivers present at the time of arrival. Three staff records and three children?s records were reviewed. The inspector reviewed requirements and compliance in the areas of administration, physical plant, staffing and supervision, programming, medication, special care and emergencies and nutrition.
Information gathered during the inspection determined non-compliance with applicable standards or law and violations were documented on the violation notice issued to the program.

Standard #: 8VAC20-780-270-A Description: Based on observation and interview, not all of the areas and equipment of the center were maintained in a clean, safe, operable condition.
Evidence:
There was trash and debris to include, candy and food wrappers, beverage bottles, used face masks, and four pieces of cracked plastic that had broken off of toys in several areas of the outdoor play space.
These items were accessible to children when they are on the playground and pose hazards due to the possible presence of germs as well as the sharp edges of the cracked plastic pieces that were broken off of toys.
The program director acknowledged the presence of trash and unsanitary debris on the play yard during the inspection and agreed it should not be accessible to the children.Plan of Correction: The program director stated that she intends to speak with and train staff that the playground must be inspected prior to children using it and unsanitary or dangerous items must be removed prior to the children entering the space.
