Technical Assistance:
The file for the new assistant caregiver was reviewed today. This caregiver will begin employment in March. The Inspector advised the provider regarding all items that are needed in this file prior to the caregiver's first day of employment.

Comments:
An unannounced full renewal inspection was conducted today. The provider was caring for 4 children, totaling 12 points. Children's records, caregiver records, administrative files, background checks, emergency preparedness items, the physical plant, children's nutrition, and provider:child interactions were inspected today.
It was reported to the Inspector that no children's medications were on site today.

The children were observed playing with toys, listening to music, engaging in free play, practicing their bi-lingual counting skills, and interacting with the caregiver.
The children were to be served spaghetti, corn, yogurt, whole wheat toast, and milk for lunch today.

This inspection was completed between approximately 9:45am and 11:10am. Thank you for meeting with me today. If you have any questions regarding this inspection please email me at sandra.dimperio@dss.virginia.gov

Violations:
Standard #: 22VAC40-111-320-E
Description: Based on observations, it was determined that one portable electric heater did not have a barrier and was not located at least three feet from combustible materials.
Evidence:
Upon arrival, the Inspector observed one portable electric heater in use on the floor in the children's nap room. The children have access to this room when they go in there for diaper changes and nap time. The heater in use did not have a screen or safety barrier in place surrounding the hot elements. These elements were hot to the touch. In addition, the provider had placed the heater directly next to a plastic chair and wooden shelf. These items could become combustible if heated by the portable electric heater.

Plan of Correction: The heater was immediately unplugged and removed from the child care area. I will not use any heaters.
