Comments:
An unannounced monitoring inspection was conducted on Friday, March 13, 2020 from 10:20am to approximately 11:40am to determine the provider's compliance with licensing standards. During today's inspection, there were a total of five children in care totaling 13 points in the direct care of one caregiver. Upon arrival, the children were observed in the designated area for childcare playing with toys. Throughout the inspection, the children were observed during free-play, reading books with the provider, and interacting with peers. The children were celebrating the 100th day of "100 Days of Giving." The designated areas for childcare were deemed appropriate and are equipped with age appropriate toys and materials to meet the needs of the children. The bathroom, kitchen, and designated childcare areas were all inspected during today's inspection. The inspector observed the required postings. The first aid kit and non-medical emergency supplies were inspected. Five children's records and two providers' records were reviewed today. There were no injury reports to review. The provider does not administer medications or provide transportation at this time.

If you have any questions about this inspection, please contact the licensing inspector, Florence Martus, at (804) 662-9772.

Violations:
Standard #: 22VAC40-111-430-A
Description: Based on observation on 03/13/2020, the provider did not ensure children under two years of age and children over two years of age who are not developmentally ready to climb or descend stairs without supervision shall not have access to stairs.

Evidence: 1) When the licensing inspector arrived at the family day home, the inspector observed the staircase that goes from the room where the children receive care into the main floor did not have a protective barrier to prevent access. 2) There were two children under the age of two years that were present during the inspection and had access to the set of stairs.

Plan of Correction: Corrected on site. The provider will work on a more permanent solution to ensure the protective barrier is always up.
