- Technical Assistance:
1. Discussed programming requirements regardless of the number of children in care. Children attending in the back-up care program should have age appropriate activities daily. 2. When children are moved into another group/class, they should be added to that attendance tracking sheet; and ideally the staff should know the name of each child in their group/class.
While on-site to conduct an unannounced investigation, also conducted a monitoring inspection 1:35-3:10pm. Observed 44 children + 7 direct-care staff. Ratios and supervision were in compliance. A new Director was transferred to the center in April. Children were observed taking naps during the inspection. Infants were being held, fed, and having play time on the floor. The center was found to be clean, safeguarded appropriately, and well supplied with toys and equipment for the children. Required documents were posted. Record keeping was in order. Questions about this inspection may be directed to: email@example.com
Standard #: 22VAC40-185-360-A Description: Based on observations made and interview conducted, it was determined that the daily activities planned for the school-age group today were not age and stage appropriate. Evidence: Upon arrival to the center the inspector observed a school-age child sitting in the office with Staff #2, who explained that he was there because the teacher was on a lunch break. When asked what activities were planned for the school-age group at this time, Staff #2 stated that there were none. Younger children in the group had been moved into the kindergarten prep class for quiet time/naps. Staff #2 stated that the child was too old (8-9 years old) to be in the kindergarten prep class, so he was in the office with her while she did "office work." Plan of Correction: Director will review with teachers during staff meeting on 8/9/16 that child safe areas are for children only-not the office or kitchen. This includes all enrolled + back-up children. Also that back-up children need to stay in their designated classrooms through the day. Director will work with new back-up teacher on age appropriate activities and lesson plans for school-age back-up children.
Standard #: 22VAC40-185-440-A Description: Based on observations made, it was determined that a sleeping child was not given a cot to nap time. Evidence: A 5 year-old child was observed sleeping while sitting on the tile floor, and leaning against the wall with his head falling forward, in the kindergarten prep room. When the inspector asked the teacher, Staff #4, about it she stated "it's okay" because the child was from school-age group. Plan of Correction: All back-up children will be given a mat/cot to sleep on even if they are school-age. Director will review sleep policy + procedures at the 8/9/16 staff mtg.
