Discussed the gardens and science area.
29 children present with 9 staff in 5 groupings during this monitoring inspection. The children were observed playing inside, playing on the playground, eating lunch and napping. Interaction between staff and children observed in all the rooms. The children were doing puzzles and playing with dress-ups. The children had Salisbury steak, mashed potatoes rolls, peaches and pineapple, with milk offered as the drink. This visit was started at 11:15 and ended at 1:30. Standard #: 22VAC40-185-270-A Description: The center failed to keep the the building in a clean safe and operable condition. Evidence: During the inspection the inspector found a broken chair on the playground, A drain pipe from the roof held together with large amounts of duct tape and a bucket with standing water containing mosquito larva. Plan of Correction: We will throw out the chair, done during the visit. We have a claim in to the insurance company , still waiting for the answer to fix the drainage pipe. I will dump out the water today, and we will talk to staff about dumping out any standing water they see.
Standard #: 22VAC40-185-280-B Description: The center failed to lock up pesticides. Evidence: Based on the review of the physical plant a bottle of pesticides was found on a part of the playground developed as a science area in the early spring, according to staff the area was not in use this summer. Plan of Correction: Removed during the visit. Will make sure we lock up pesticides.
Standard #: 22VAC40-185-330-B Description: The center has mulch on the back playground with large stick mixed in , the director was unable to verify that the mulch is certified for playground use. She indicated this is the mulch she always buys. Plan of Correction: Will remove the large sticks and ask for mulch that is certified for playground use.
Standard #: 22VAC40-185-520-D Description: A bottle of insect repellent was found in the school age room on a shelf behind the teachers desk , The bottle is not labeled with the name of the child to whom it belongs and is not out of reach of children. Plan of Correction: Will figure who it belongs to , but will lock it up in the medication box right now.
