Thank you for your time and assistance with the unannounced monitoring inspection conducted on October 19, 2016. The on-site inspection was conducted from 10:05a.m. to 12:55p.m. On this date, there were 32 children in the care of four (4) staff members in two (23) classrooms. There were a total of 34 children enrolled in the preschool program. Six (6) children's records were reviewed and four (4) staff members and four (4) children interviewed. The medication and medication paperwork was reviewed for one (1) child. Four (4) staff members' records were reviewed on October 18, 2016 at the MACAA Head Start administration office. Lunch was served by the elementary school and was observed to meet USDA guidelines. There was an ample supply of age appropriate toys, equipment, and teaching materials and the children seemed comfortable and familiar with the daily routine. Some of the items observed and reviewed included: required posted material, injury reports, documentation of emergency evacuation and shelter-in-place drills, current fire and health inspections, outdoor play, centers, student evaluations, circle time, language art activities, bathroom procedures, lunch, and nap. Please contact me if you have questions concerning this inspection, the licensing standards, and/or if I may be of assistance to you (540) 280-0742.
Standard #: 22VAC40-185-500-A Description: Based on observations in two classrooms and verification from staff, the staff in both classrooms failed to have the children wash their hands with soap and water or use disposable wipes after eating a meal. Evidence: 1. The staff in Classroom #1 and in Classroom #2 did not have the children wash their hands after eating lunch. The children finished lunch, walked back to their classrooms and began their normal activities. 2. Staff Member A and Staff Member C both confirmed that the children did not wash their hands after lunch and that they were unaware that the children needed to wash hands after eating. Plan of Correction: Staff will be reminded by the administration that the children will wash their hands both before and after eating meals and snacks.
