- Technical Assistance:
Technical assistance today included measurement of "S" rings on the tire swing; outdoor areas; documentation of staff qualifications and training.
An unannounced renewal inspection was conducted today from 10:45 am - 12:30 pm. There were 22 children present with 5 staff. I observed children enjoying the first nice day outdoors on the playground after winter weather; children listening to a story; singing a song; practicing writing and having interesting discussions during lunch. The lower level's dramatic play area was set up to be an igloo, complete with white boxes of "ice," warm clothing and polar friends. Standard #: 22VAC40-185-240-C Description: During a review of staff records today, it was found that not all staff had documentation of at least 16 hours of annual staff development this year as required. Evidence: A review of four staff files found less than 16 hours of required annual training for two long term employees (Staff # 3 and 4.) Plan of Correction: We will make sure all training is documented.
Standard #: 22VAC40-185-240-D-4 Description: Based on a review of records and staff confirmation, it was found that no staff current in Medication Administration Training were present during lunchtime today when children were present who have emergency medications on site. Evidence: Staff # 1, who is current in MAT training, was not in the building, and no other staff current in MAT training were present. Plan of Correction: Another staff is scheduled next week to take the MAT training.
Standard #: 22VAC40-185-270-A Description: During today's inspection, some areas of the center were observed to not be maintained in a safe condition. Evidence: Indoors: Two of the black protective coverings on the stairway to one classroom were observed to be cracked, creating a tripping hazard. Outdoors: Some of the wooden boards were observed to be cracked in a way that left sharp edges of wood exposed. Some paint was observed to be chipping and some sharp edges were exposed in the siding near the door. A planter was observed to have sharp edges in the plastic surface. Plan of Correction: The stair coverings will be replaced but duct tape will be placed on them to cover them today. The planter was removed during the inspection. The wood areas will be fixed within the next 10 days but I will duct tape them right away.
Standard #: 22VAC40-185-550-D Description: During a review of records today, it was found that there were not a minimum of two shelter-in-place drills conducted in 2016. Evidence: The last documentation of a shelter-in-place drill was written as 2015. Plan of Correction: We will have one scheduled for tomorrow, and will do another in the spring.
