An unannounced renewal inspection was conducted on May 5, 2017. There were 40 children present with eight staff members. Additional staff were on site for administrative, volunteer and support purposes. Activities observed in the three classrooms operating on this date included circle time, card games and board games, arts and crafts and sight word recognition. The posted menu indicated that today' lunch would consist of taco salad with lettuce, tomatoes and cheese, black beans, rice, mixed fruit and milk. Three children's records and four medications were reviewed during the inspection. The outdoor play area was not inspected due to inclement weather.
Standard #: 22VAC40-185-270-A Description: Based on observation and inspection of the facility, the licensee did not ensure that areas and equipment of the center, inside and outside, shall be maintained in a clean, safe and operable condition. Unsafe conditions shall include, but not be limited to, splintered, cracked or otherwise deteriorating wood; chipped or peeling paint; visible cracks, bending or warping, rusting or breakage of any equipment; head entrapment hazards; and protruding nails, bolts or other components that could entangle clothing or snag skin. Evidence: 1. During the inspection conducted on May 5, 2017, in the restroom in Room 1, the licensing inspector observed two rusted and protruding nails above the middle toilet. 2. In the children's restroom connected to the cafeteria, the licensing inspector observed peeling paint and three rusted and protruding nails above the toilet. Plan of Correction: Center Coordinator spoke with maintenance personnel and all items will be repaired within two weeks.
Standard #: 22VAC40-185-280-B Description: Based on observation and inspection of the facility, the licensee did not ensure that hazardous substances such as cleaning materials, insecticides, and pesticides shall be kept in a locked place using a safe locking method that prevents access by children. Evidence: During the inspection conducted on May 5, 2017, the licensing inspector observed two cans of disinfectant spray on top of a towel dispenser in the staff restroom connected the cafeteria where the children have meals. The door was unlocked and there was nothing in place to prevent access by the children in care. Plan of Correction: The items were removed during the inspection.
