Comments:
An unannounced renewal inspection was made on 8/17/17. There were 20 children present with three staff supervising. Five children's records were reviewed. Three staff records had been previously reviewed and one newly hired staff record will be reviewed on 8/21/17. The inspection will be exited on 8/21/17 after review of the staff record and policies and procedures. There were no medications at the site. The inspector arrived at the school at 2:00 pm on 8/17/17 and departed at 4:30 pm. The record review/exit inspection took place on 8/21/17 at 9:00 am until 1:00 pm. The children were observed during arrivals, during group gym (gross motor) time, during snack, during homework time, during a craft activity, and during departures. There was discussion with the staff at the site about the following: health report due by 9/13/17, fire drill needing to be practiced and documented for August 2017, ensuring final inspection report (Violation Notice) is posted when an Acknowledgement of Inspection form is left, condition noted on a child's record that staff may need to know symptoms, etc., having documentation of program lead qualifications.

Violations:
Standard #: 22VAC40-185-290-3
Description: Based on observation, the center failed to ensure that electrical outlets had protective covers in areas used by preschool children. Evidence: 1. The program used the cafeteria for snack from approximately 3:00 pm until 3:30 pm. There were four outlets observed on the walls of the cafeteria that were unused and uncovered. There were five children of preschool age (four years old) in care on the date of the inspection.

Plan of Correction: The staff will contact the YMCA main office to get outlet protector covers. Staff will ensure outlets are covered in areas used by the children.

Standard #: 22VAC40-185-500-A
Description: Based on observation, the center failed to ensure that hand washing was practiced as required. Evidence: 1. Two staff were observed preparing afternoon snack (pineapple from a can and graham crackers). The staff did not wash their hands prior to preparing the snack. Both staff were observed using germicidal hand sanitizer prior to preparing the snack; however, hand washing with soap and running water is required.

Plan of Correction: The staff were reminded to use soap and water when hand washing is required.
