An unannounced renewal inspection was done today October 18, 2017. The inspector arrived at 9:20 AM and departed the program at 1:00 P.M. There were twenty-two children in care today with four staff supervising the children. The children gathered in the big room in the morning and then went to their individual classroom. The children were observed during free play, morning snack, activity opening bottles and in their classrooms. The majority of children leave at 1:00 PM but some stayed for the afternoon program which ends at 6:00 PM. Five staff's records, three board officers and five children's records were reviewed during the inspection. Dicussion with director about: ratio is the younger grouping of children, square footage for the classroom space used for the 2 year old class and the new sworn disclosure required as of September 1, 2017.
Standard #: 22VAC40-185-70-A Description: Based on review of staff records and observation, the center failed to ensure that all staff that is used for ratio had a completed record. Evidence: 1. Four children were with two community members that were testing to ensure that they could not open child proof bottles. There were no staff members present with a current record until the LI asked if they were alone with the children. The program director took the remaining children and joined the community members. They were alone with the children for approximately 5 minutes. Plan of Correction: From this point on a staff person will be with each grouping at all times.
Standard #: 22VAC40-185-340-F Description: Based on observation, the center failed to ensure that all children were within sight supervision with staff. Evidence: 1. Staff # 3 left the classroom and left staff # 2 to watch two classes that were adjacent to each other. A student shut the door of staff # 2's classroom and the four children were out of sight supervision of staff # 2 for approximately 2 to 3 minutes. Plan of Correction: The program director will ensure that children are within sight and sound at all times.
Standard #: 22VAC40-185-500-A Description: Based on observation, the center failed to ensue that all handwashing procedures were followed according to the standard. Evidence: 1. After the three year old class had morning snack the eight children did not wash their hands after eating. Plan of Correction: A wipe or will use running water after and before snack and director will remind staff.
