Standard #: 22VAC40-185-400-B Complaint related: Yes Description: Based on interviews with staff the center did not provide constructive behavior guidance with a child in their care. Evidence: On 10/30/2017, staff #1 and staff #2 reported that a staff who should have redirected a child to appropriate behavior and help resolve conflicts, instead told the child "You're acting like a brat". Behavior guidance should be constructive and help redirect children. Plan of Correction: The staff member has been spoken to about constructive behavior guidance, and the entire staff trained on positive tone and reinforcement during staff meeting 10/30/17.
Standard #: 22VAC40-185-580-D Complaint related: No Description: Based on observations made by the inspector the center is not providing a safe way for children to get onto vehicles when being transported to school. Evidence: On 10/30/17, the inspector observed nine school age children running from the entrance of the child day center down the steps and into the parking lot to get on a YMCA vehicle to be transported to school. The YMCA staff inside of the building stood at the entrance of the child day center and did not walk the children to the vehicle. The YMCA staff inside of the vehicle did not pull the vehicle near the curb or get out to assist the children to get into the vehicle. Another group (14) school age children were observed running and walking from the entrance of the child day center, down the steps and through the back part of the parking lot where YMCA vehicles are parked. The children ran and walked to the side road entrance into the parking lot where they waited for a public school bus to be transported to school. There was one staff walking in the middle of the group, a second staff was seen walking away from the group, and later came back to the group. There was no control over the group as they ran through the parking lot to the bus stop. Plan of Correction: Staff will walk children from the entrance to the bus and wait until all children have boarded and been accounted for. Staff will have students walk in a single file line to the public school bus stop and wait in designated area. This plan has already been discussed with our staff.
