Standard 550 was discussed with the director. It is recommended the the required components in the center's written emergency preparedness plan are easy to read and follow by staff.
An unannounced monitoring inspection was conducted from 10:15am-12:30pm. Upon arrival there were 49 children in care with 13 staff present. Sample of 2 staff and 4 children's records were reviewed in addition to 2 medications. The children were observed eating lunch and during toileting. Infants were observed sleeping in cribs and playing on the floor with staff.
Standard #: 22VAC40-185-270-A Description: Based on observation the center failed to ensure all areas and equipment of the center were maintained in a safe condition. Evidence: There was peeling paint on the wall in the school-age classroom. Plan of Correction: The director will put a work order in to fix the peeling paint.
Standard #: 22VAC40-185-540-B Description: Based on observation the center failed to ensure each first aid kit was easily accessible to staff but not to children. Evidence: In the school-age room the first aid bag containing the items required in a first aid kit was hanging on a hook that was accessible to the children in care. Plan of Correction: The director will move the first aid bag to a place in the room that is not accessible to children.
Standard #: 22VAC40-185-550-B Description: Based on a record review the center failed to ensure all procedural components were included in the center's emergency preparedness plan. Evidence: The center's emergency plan did not include sounding of the alarms for an evacuation, shelter-in-place and intruder procedures. Plan of Correction: The center has a a different alarm for each drill, it was just not included in the written plan. The director will add the sounding of alarms for each drill to the written plan.
Standard #: 22VAC40-185-570-I Description: Based on observation and interview with staff the center failed to ensure there was a one-day's emergency supply of disposable bottles, nipples and formula for the children in care. Evidence: The center had 3 bottles in the emergency kit for the infants. There were 5 infants that are fed by a bottle in care at the time of inspection. Plan of Correction: The director will get extra bottles and nipples to add to the emergency supply kit in the infant room.
