Today we discussed compliance and changes in background check regulations, sunscreen and insect repellent

Comments:
An unannounced renewal inspection of the child day center and records was conducted from12:50pm through 3:39pm. There were 55 children in care with nine staff. Children present ranged in age from 3months to four years old. Children were observed in teacher and self-directed activities including nap restroom routines, outside play and snack. Required postings, fire and health inspections, emergency evacuations, emergency items and medication were reviewed during the inspection. Violations regarding safe sleep, hand washing and outside play were cited and appear on the violation notice.

Violations:
Standard #: 22VAC40-185-370-1
Description: Based on observation and interview the center failed to ensure that when an infant is placed in his crib, is be placed on his back (supine). Evidence: 1 - Child 1, a 16 month old was observed sleeping on his stomach in his crib. 2 - When asked staff 2 stated that when she placed child 1 in the crib she placed him on his stomach. a. Furthermore, staff 2 stated that she thought it was okay to place the child in the crib on his stomach because he was old enough to turn himself over.

Plan of Correction: Center management will retrain all staff in safe sleep requirements.

Standard #: 22VAC40-185-370-3
Description: Based on interview and observation the center failed to ensure that infants are provided outdoor time if weather and air quality allow. Evidence: 1 - When asked staff 2 and 3 in the infant room stated that infants go outside only once they are able to walk. 2 - During the inspection the infants and toddlers did not go outside. The weather at 3pm was 70 degrees and sunny.

Plan of Correction: Center management will remind and retrain all staff that all children must do outside each day weather and air quality permitting.

Standard #: 22VAC40-185-500-A
Description: Based on observation and interview the center failed to ensure that staff wash their hands with soap and running water before and after a diaper change. Evidence: 1 - Staff 3 did not wash her hands after she changed the diaper of child 2. Staff 3 moved around the classroom completing tasks. At one point the staff walked out the classroom, touching the door knob to open and close the door. The staff had to touch the cabinet door she opened and the items she retrieved all without first washing her hands. 2 - Staff 3 confirmed that she did not wash her hands until she came back into the classroom.

Plan of Correction: Center management will remind and retrain all staff on the importance of washing hands immediately after changing a diaper.
