Today we discussed: - changes in background checks documentation and compliance -changes in reporting serious injuries to the department -use of safety tube to determine if a items are a chocking hazard for children under three years old - nap time supervision - medication
An unannounced renewal inspection of the child day center and records was conducted from 10:30am through .1:30pm There were 32 children present with four teaching staff two administrator present. Children's and staff records were reviewed. Children were observed in teacher and self-directed activities. The inspector reviewed documentation for fire inspection, health inspection, medication and required postings. Emergency supplies were also reviewed. Violations regarding diaper changing/supervision and physical plant were cited and appear on the violation notice.
Standard #: 22VAC40-185-270-A Description: Based on observation and interview the center failed to ensure to equipment is maintained in safe condition. Evidence: 1 - There is a shelf in the 3/4 year old room that is not secured and therefore poses a toppling hazard. 2 - Staff 3 stated that the shelf was not secured to the wall. Plan of Correction: Center management will have the shelf secured to the wall or the shelf will be removed.
Standard #: 22VAC40-185-500-B Description: Based on observation and interview the center failed to ensure that there is sight and sound supervision for all children when a child is being diapered. Evidence: 1 - In the toddler room there were four children sitting on the floor coloring while staff 2 was in the bathroom changing the diaper of child 1. a. During the diaper change staff 2 had her back to the children in the children in the classroom and therefore could not maintain sight supervision of all the children in care. 2 - Staff 2 stated that she could not see the children while she was changing the diaper of child 1. Plan of Correction: Immediately an additional staff person will step into the toddler classroom during diaper changes. Long term the diaper changing table will be moved to a place outside the bathroom and in the classroom.
