Technical Assistance:
Technical assistance today included record keeping, incident reports, documentation of proof of identity and unused rooms.

Comments:
An unannounced renewal inspection was conducted today from 10:00 AM - 12:35 pm. There were three classes present today with 27 children and 6 staff. I observed children outdoors exploring the strawberry plants that had (miraculously) begun to grow; children role - playing in the pretend house; and indoor Montessori tasks; painting with watercolors; working with play-dough; following a small foot-trail and preparing to go outdoors. If you have any questions, please contact me at brenda.kuhlman@dss.virginia.gov

Violations:
Standard #: 22VAC40-185-90--A
Description: Based on a review of records today, there was an agreement not signed by parents by the child's first day as required. Evidence: During a review of a sample of children's files today, none had a signed agreement that indicated knowledge of the standard requiring parents to notify the center within 24 hours if a household member contacts a contagious disease.

Plan of Correction: This was updated today and parents will be asked to sign it today and this week.

Standard #: 22VAC40-185-270-A
Description: Based on observation during today's inspection, there were some outdoor areas not maintained in a safe condition. Evidence: A wooden stump of the balance beam and the back gate were observed today to have splintery areas accessible to children.

Plan of Correction: Maintenance will come out and sand them down.

Standard #: 22VAC40-185-430-B
Description: Based on observation during today's inspection, there were some art materials observed to be accessible to children that were not age appropriate. Evidence: One classroom with children age 18 months and older had decorations on an accessible shelf that had several small gemstones on the inside of craft flowers, and cardboard crafted caterpillars with tiny "googly eyes," both of which pose a choking hazard to younger children.

Plan of Correction: Younger children will use sticker eyes. I will tell staff today to be have age and stage appropriate including arts and crafts.

Standard #: 22VAC40-191-40-D-1-B
Description: Based on a review of records today, one employee did not have all required background checks as required. Evidence: Staff # 2, who serves in an administrative capacity, had a hire date of 2/1/18, but did not have results of the required Criminal Record Check within 30 days of employment.

Plan of Correction: She will be contacted to go get the fingerprints done as soon as possible.
