Protect Children From Drownings: Simple Water Safety Tips

The number of children drowning or nearly drowning in Virginia is on the rise, particularly during the summer months. In 2025, the Virginia Department of Social Services saw a nearly 83% increase in children almost dying from water-related accidents compared to the previous year. For every child that dies from drowning, another five are sent to the emergency room for injuries from nearly drowning. These accidents happen primarily in public and private swimming pools, followed by bathtubs and open bodies of water.

Nationally, drownings are the number one cause of injury-related deaths among children between the ages of 1 and 4, and the second leading cause of death for children ages 5-14. Whether outside at the pool, lake, beach, or inside at home, water safety should be a priority for everyone!
