Potable Water Lead Testing Requirements
The VDOE recently distributed memos to licensed child day programs, certified preschools and religiously exempt child day centers, sharing the requirement to develop and implement a plan to test potable water pursuant to ? 22.1-289.057 of the Code of Virginia. The VDOE will begin determining compliance with this statute effective January 1, 2025. The memos can be found on the VDOE child care website: www.childcare.virginia.gov.

New: MAT Seizure Rescue Nasal Spray Online Course
The Medication Administration Training (MAT) Program recently announced the new MAT Seizure Rescue Nasal Spray (SRNS) online course. The training is available for free on the MAT Online Learning Center and will enable MAT-Certified providers to administer this emergency medication quickly and correctly in the event of an emergency seizure situation.

Comments:
An unannounced monitoring inspection was conducted from 10:45am - 12:15pm with the center assistant director. There were 44 children, ranging from three months to five years of age, present with 10 staff supervising. Infant care was observed and older children were observed eating lunch and playing in centers. Lunch served today: meatballs and cheese, rice, corn, oranges and milk. Four child records and four staff records were reviewed, along with the emergency drill log, written daily attendance, and the written allergy list. Standard #: 8VAC20-780-500-A
Description: Based on observation, the facility failed to ensure that handwashing procedures were followed, as required. Evidence: In the infant classroom, staff did not wash an infant's hands after they finished eating or after their diaper change. In the infant classroom, staff did not wash their hands before feeding an infant.

Standard #: 8VAC20-780-530-A
Description: Based on observation, review of records and staff interview, the facility failed to ensure that at least one staff in each classroom has current certification in first aid and CPR. Evidence: Staff #1 was observed working alone in the 3's classroom and their first aid/CPR certification expired on 3/19/2024.
