Details

Effective September 8, 2020, Accomack DSS is open to the public by appointment only during normal business hours (8:30 – 5:00). Accomack DSS will continue to respond to emergency cases that cannot be handled by alternative methods and require face-to-face contact. Any substantial updates will be done by radio (WESR) and the County website: https://www.co.accomack.va.us. Any individual needing Medicaid, TANF, SNAP, or Child Care Subsidy should apply at CommonHelp (www.virginia.commonhelp.org). If the individual does not have internet access they may apply by calling 1-855-635-4370 or (Medicaid only) 1-855-242-8282. Paper applications and requested documents may be dropped off in our blue drop box, in front of the agency. Adult Protective Services and Child Protective Services continues to be open. During business hours you can continue to call the agency at 757-787-1530. After business hours you can call the Sheriff’s department, or the State Hot line at 1-800-552-7096. Applications will be available in our lobby at 120 Clover Street (near the Rite Aid) through 3/31/2020. Beginning 4/1/2020, our offices will be open at our new location, 1280 Browning Hollow (previously Longs Fork Elementary School). You may use the agency drop box (located in the lobby – both locations) to submit paperwork during normal business hours. Due to the number of COVID cases in Galax City, the Galax City Department of Social Services' office will be again closing our doors to the public. Our office hours will still be 8am to 4:30pm but we will be doing telephone interviews and any person to person contact will be by appointment only. We will be closed until further notice. A reopening date will be decided as soon as the numbers start to decrease.

In our efforts to ensure the safety of our community, the agency will manage most matters by phone. If a face- to-face meeting is required, an appointment will be scheduled. Those coming to the agency without an appointment are asked to call the above number before entering the building, and instructions will be provided to you based on social distancing requirements. We ask that anyone coming to our agency abide by Governor Northam’s guidance to wear a facial covering. A pre-screening tool will be posted on the front door and you are asked to avoid entry to the building if you answer “Yes” to any of the screening questions. The safety of our citizens and employees is important. Gloucester County will continue to work with all appropriate federal and state partners to support program participants with vital resources during this period of uncertainty. Child and Adult Protective services continue to be offered. If you have concerns and wish to make a report, please call GDSS at 693-2671. In an effort to maintain the health and well-being of our staff and citizens, the Greensville/Emporia Department of Social Services will close to the public effective, Monday, January 11, 2021 until further notice. Our agency will remain staffed during regular business hours Monday – Friday 8:00 a.m – 5:00 p.m. to meet the needs of our citizens. Beginning April 1, 2021, Sussex County DSS will reopen to the public with a modified business schedule. The building will be closed every Tuesday and Friday at 3pm for deep cleaning. Applications, renewals and verifications can be dropped off in the drop off mailbox located outside the building. For replacement EBT cards, call 866-281-2448 to have a card mailed to you. The Virginia Beach Department of Human Services will reopen on March 15 under modified conditions. Citizens are asked to connect with us virtually to the greatest extent possible. Individuals dropping off paperwork or applications can do so at the dropbox outside our main building at 3432 Virginia Beach Blvd. Anyone applying for benefit programs (SNAP, TANF, Medicaid), can do so by phone at 855-635-4370, or online at CommonHelp.Virginia.gov. Anyone who needs a paper application can receive one by mail or from our local office on Virginia Beach Blvd. For local inquiries, please call the agency at 757-385-3200.
