Comments:
An unannounced renewal inspection was conducted on 2/13/2020 from 9:40 am to 12:55 pm. The children were observed playing in centers, engaging in art and science activities, reading, singing songs, eating snack, and participating in Valentine?s Day class parties. A formal observation was completed in the Fish and Teddy Bear rooms. Additionally, when appropriate the inspector interacted with children in each classroom. Records were reviewed for 10 children and 10 staff. Emergency medications are being administered and were reviewed. Injury reports were reviewed as well as the center?s injury prevention plan which was updated for the injuries that occurred in 2019.

The center's first aid kit and emergency supplies were inspected.

Today's Census: 111 children were on site during the inspection.

There were no repeat violations found during today?s inspection.

Violations:
Standard #: 22VAC40-185-280-B
Description: Based on observation and interview, the center failed to ensure that hazardous substances such as cleaning materials are kept in a locked place using a safe locking method that prevents access by children.

Evidence:

1. The Fish room had an unlocked can of Febreeze Air Spray and Clorox spray on a shelf that was unlocked. The warning label stated caution, keep out of the reach of children.
2. The Teddy Bear room had an unlocked container of Lysol wipes with a warning label that stated caution, keep out of the reach of children, as well as an unlocked bottle of bleach solution.
3. Unlocked hand sanitizer dispensers were stationed by a door and at the top of a stairway. The director confirmed that children do occasionally have access to these areas.

Plan of Correction: The program will lock substances and keep out of reach of children.

Standard #: 22VAC40-185-290-3
Description: Based on observation, the center failed to ensure that electrical outlets have protective covers in an area utilized by preschool aged children.

Evidence:
1. A power surge outlet box was observed in the fellowship hall. The box was plugged in and the switch was turned on. The outlets were missing protective covers.
2. Preschool children were observed utilizing the fellowship hall area.

Plan of Correction: We will cover the outlets with protective outlet coverings.

Standard #: 22VAC40-185-520-A
Description: Based on observation, the center failed to ensure that over-the-counter skin products are not kept or used beyond the expiration date of the product.

Evidence:
1. An expired tube of topical antibiotic ointment was found during the inspection. The ointment expired May of 2019.

Plan of Correction: We will replace expired ointment.
