The facility self reported that on 7/24/2019, a staff person used inappropriate techniques when attempting to diffuse a child's defiant behavior. Investigation, to include review of written staff statements, staff interviews and review of the video recording, determined that a violation occurred and was cited.
An exit meeting was conducted with the program director and supervisor prior to closure of the investigation.

Standard #: 22VAC40-185-400-B Description: Based upon review of written statements, staff interviews and review of a recorded video, the facility has not ensured that in guiding children's behavior, staff employ techniques intended to redirect the children to appropriate behavior and to resolve conflict.
Evidence:
Staff interview, written statements and a video recording revealed that in response to child 1's (age 12 years) defiant behavior when told that the game of four square was being stopped die to the children misbehaving, staff 1 became upset and chased after child 1, who had taken the ball and run away with it. Staff 1 caught up to child 1 and attempted to grab the ball away from child 1 by reaching around child 1 from behind. Their legs became entwined, causing child 1 to fall to the children. Child 1 then ran back at staff 1 and punched him in the chest.Plan of Correction: All staff review the Code of Conduct and on a staff meeting on August 6, 2019. Staff were also retrained on behavior guidance, the Y's discipline policies and effective strategies.
